Elementary Math Instructional Coach

Job Description

Job Goal: The PreK-5 coach will lead building efforts to increase math achievement for all student populations. Mission is to develop future mathematics leaders by supporting teachers of mathematics in the areas of curriculum, assessment, and instruction and by fostering an environment of collaboration, reflection, and professional growth.

Contract: 190 day contract (teacher salary)

Reports to: Under the general direction of the school level Principal and Assistant Principal

Desired Qualifications

  • Teacher Certification in elementary education
  • Teacher Certification in mathematics
  • Five years recent experience teaching math
  • A deep level of understanding of the South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards of Mathematics including the Mathematical Process Standards
  • Evidence of success with the Guided Math Workshop Model
  • Evidence of success with Number Talk Routines
  • Participation in some type of cognitive math training (CGI, Thinking Mathematically or Extending Children’s Mathematics)
  • Evidence of success in working with adult learners
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of strong written communication and presentation skills
  • Evidence of strong planning and organizational skills
  • Evidence of successful leadership in mathematics content at a grade level and building level
  • Experience in conducting mathematics staff development
  • Experience in mentoring/coaching teachers
  • In-depth knowledge of a variety of mathematics instructional strategies necessary to support the South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards of Mathematics including the Mathematical Process Standards
  • A strong commitment to team collaboration through Professional Learning Communities

Performance Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers with the implementation of South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards of Mathematics including the Mathematical Process Standards.
  • Demonstrate exemplary math instruction for PreK-5 teachers through the following researched-based practices: guided math, small group instruction, observation, coaching, model lessons, co-teaching, collaborative lesson planning and small and large group professional development.
  • Assist with the development of District-wide common formative assessments and benchmarks.
  • Assist teachers in diagnosing individual student mathematics weaknesses and match these areas of need with appropriate instructional strategies and resources based on the South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards of Mathematics
  • Assist with disaggregating and analyzing data (i.e. MAP, NWEA Learning Continuum, CFAs, Benchmarks, SC Ready) to help guide teacher’s instructional decisions
  • Monitor and report the effectiveness and progress of improved mathematics instruction and student performance to building principals and PLC teams
  • Assist in revisions and updates of the curriculum guides for K-5 Mathematics
  • Help make recommendations regarding instructional materials
  • Participate in various training sessions for leaders of mathematics
